Contains the following types of materials: photographs, photo albums. Covers the following war: Russo-Japanese War, 1904-1905. Contains photographs of the Russian and Japanese Armies. General description of the collection: The Russo-Japanese War photograph collection consists of photos from the war and from foreign military observers who traveled with the armies of Russia and Japan. The collection covers all aspects of the military operations. The American observers produced thousands of photographs of the uniforms, accoutrements, weaponry, logistics, vehicles and equipments and all aspects of soldier life in the field. Photo albums submitted by the observers are titled: The Russo-Japanese War 1904-1905, collected by Maj. M.M. Macomb, General Staff (G.S.), United States (U.S.) military attaché with the Russian Armies in Manchuria; Report of the Russian-Japanese War by Maj. Charles Lynch, M.D., General Staff; Catalog of photographic negatives to the Report of Col. John Van Rennselaer Hoff, military agent, U.S.A. with the Russian Army in Manchuria, 1905; Report of Lt. Commander McCulley, U.S.N. and Capt. Hudson, U.S.A., 1904; Photographs taken by Capt. S.A. Cloman, American attaché with the Russian Armies in Mancuria, 1904-1905 and Photographs taken by Capt. William V. Judson, Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army, military observer with the Russian Army in Manchuria in 1904-1905. Specific subjects include: medical aspects in fixed hospitals and in the field to include field medical treatment and evacuation methods and vehicles employed. Captain Cloman's photos deal with Red Cross activities. Major Lynch's photos cover the Japanese Army while Major Macomb's cover the Russian Army in the field. There are a great number of railroad related materials which show both troop movement and equipment. Other subjects include: artillery harness; pack devices for horse carrying of material; vehicles and carriages to include artillery carriages, both field and seacoast; saddlery; and engineer activities. There are photos of ethnic peoples of Manchuria and cities, etc. along the railroad stops. Military uniform photos of both armies are also found.
